Memorial Day Events & Activities on Long Island

There’s an awful lot to do over Memorial Day weekend when you call The Menhaden your Long Island home away from home.

Consider, for example, the blend of contemporary classical music and stargazing offered by the New Music Under the Big Sky concert on Saturday, May 28th at the Custer Observatory, just a hop, skip, and a jump away in Southold.

Part of the Rites of Spring Music Festival, this program will feature the Rites of Spring Ensemble performing works by Nils Rohwer, Osvaldo Goliov, Heitor Villa Lobos, Max Richter, and other composers. The East End-based Rites of Spring Ensemble is composed of Rites of Spring Music Festival Artistic Director Paolo Bartolani on piano/synthesizer, Iva Casian-Lakos on cello, Dan Lippell on guitar, and Daniel Pate on percussion.

Alongside the engaging music, the event will include (weather permitting) thrilling explorations of stars, planets, and other celestial features through the Custer Observatory’s numerous powerful telescopes.

Or maybe you’ll be in the mood for America’s national pastime on your Memorial Day escape to The Menhaden? Our lovely island boasts its own fine baseball team in the form of the Long Island Ducks, who’ll be hosting the Gastonia Honey Hunters over Memorial Day weekend at the Ducks’ home stadium of Fairfield Properties Ballpark in Central Islip.

The home games against the Honey Hunters (Friday, May 27th through Monday, May 30th) will come on the heels of a homestand against the Blue Crabs (May 24th through May 26th), and prelude the Ducks’ trip to the Honey Hunters’ home turf in North Carolina from May 31st through June 2nd.
